A man from Somerset has become the first person in the world to have a mobile phone fitted into his prosthetic limb.
Trevor Prideaux was born without his left arm and had struggled to use smartphones effectively as he found he had to put them on a flat service to text, send messages or use apps.
Whilst testing out a new iPhone, he found that he had to balance it on his prosthetic limb to use it and it got him thinking whether a limb with a phone fitted inside it was possible. He had contacted Apple for a blank casing to test it out but they did not agree to his request.
Instead his local mobile phone shop worked with the technicians who make his normal prosthetic arm to come up with a device which would fit a phone inside. In just five weeks his new arm was ready, which fits his new Nokia device perfectly.
Mr Prideaux spoke to a newspaper and said: “I can now take calls and make texts just by using my one hand, while the phone sits inside my arm.
“The phone slots smoothly and securely within my limb and is easily removable, when required. I think this would help a lot of people with prosthetic arms – especially those who were not born with the disability.
People who have had motorbike crashes and soldiers who have lost limbs – they could all benefit from this.”
